About the University of Guelph Scholarship

The Dry Bean Breeding & Computational Biology Lab under the Department of Plant Agriculture, University of Guelph, is inviting applications for two fully funded Master’s Graduate Research Assistantship positions starting in Fall 2025.

In order to better understand the biological processes behind seed coat color stability and darkening in cranberry and pinto beans, this research project investigates multi-omics methods, such as genomics, epigenomics, and hyperspectral imaging.

Seed coat darkening reduces the market value, shelf quality, and consumer acceptance of dry beans. The overarching goal of this study is to identify genetic and epigenetic markers that can support the development of bean varieties that resist darkening, ultimately helping breeders improve quality and food security.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Graduate Research Assistantship, applicants must have:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Genetics, Plant Science, Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, or related disciplines

• Interest and/or experience in plant genomics, epigenetics, or bioinformatics

• Familiarity with genomic and methylome analysis tools, GWAS, and EWAS

• Strong analytical, communication, and writing skills

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
